APXM-6200 as a programmable logic controller

What is a programmable logic controller?

A programmable logic controller is a specialised piece of equipment that is ubiquitous in Industry 4.0 settings as a means of controlling and monitoring industrial equipment in real-time. They connect into sensors in the target machines and their customised logic intelligently and autonomously to changing scenarios, for example increases in temperature, vibration or pressure.

Programmable logic controllers need to be:

  • AI capable: the controller needs to analyse significant quantities of input data and react when certain thresholds are met; this analysis may require on-device AI capabilities to ensure the controller can perform its role in real-time.

  • Secure: a cyber attack on an industrial setting’s programmable logic controller has the potential to greatly disrupt business operations; they must offer end-to-end security.

  • Easy to program: users need a complete set of software and development tools as well as C compilers and debugging tools for visibility into source code execution.
APXM-6200 as a programmable logic controller

The Imagination APXM-6200 CPU is a 64-bit, in-order application processor from Imagination based on the RISC-V standard. Within a programmable logic controller, APXM-6200 can operate as a performance dense CPU cluster, with the option to add more cores to boost performance.  If a real-time processor is also required, the RTXM-2200 CPU can provide additional general purpose processing.

APXM-6200 is a highly configurable CPU IP. A typical programmable logic controller use case could choose the dual-core version with per-core power control, 32KB L1 instruction and data caches and a 512KB L2 cache with ECC.

Benefits of APXM-6200 as a programmable logic controller
  • Cost effective: APXM-6200 is a performance dense application processor that can deliver the performance required of a modern programmable logic controller within a smaller silicon footprint, lowering the bill of materials for SoC designers.

  • Secure: APXM-6200 has been designed from conception to work within industry-standard security systems. It leverages RISC-V Supervisor Domains Access Protection to provide a complete security solution from secure boot to trusted execution.

  • AI-capable: With Vector Extensions, AI compute libraries and features for fast data coupling with AI accelerators, APXM-6200 is ready to support the growing demand for AI compute on programmable logic controllers.

  • Easy to program: APXM-6200 comes with a complete set of tools, compilers, debuggers, guides and software examples within the Catapult SDK to enable developers to get their code up and running – and performant – as quickly as possible.

APXM-6200 for a 4K TV SoC

What is a 4K DTV SoC?

The chip in a 4K DTV is responsible for driving the user interface, running the TV’s applications and optimising content quality through resolution upscaling or frame rate smoothing.  A typical SoC for a 4K TV contains a cluster of CPUs, a GPU and, in some cases where more advanced HMI functions are required such as gesture recognition, an AI accelerator.

4K DTV SoCs need to be:

  • Capable of running a Rich OS: majority of operating systems for the DTV market are either Linux or Android based.

  • Secure: the SoC needs to fulfil the digital rights management requirements of the broadcasters and streaming giants as well as protect the consumer’s home from malicious attacks.

  • AI capable: real-time intelligent responses to voice, gesture or touch are the future of human interaction with consumer devices.

  • Thermally efficient: the processing behind upscaling resolutions and smoothing frame rates can be very memory intensive; the best SoCs are bandwidth efficient to prevent thermal throttling and keep silicon costs down.
APXM-6200 in a 4K DTV SoC

The Imagination APXM-6200 CPU is a 64-bit, in-order application processor from Imagination based on the RISC-V standard. The application processor works as the brain of the television, running the operating system, executing the software programs and offloading tasks to the other processors in the SoC as required.

APXM-6200 is a highly configurable CPU IP. A typical 4K TV CPU could choose a quad-core version with per-core power control and 32KB L1 instruction and data caches.

Benefits of APXM-6200 in a 4K DTV SoC
  • Rich OS: APXM-6200 is designed to run Linux and Android operating systems out of the box thanks to full compliance with the RVA22 specification and support for RISC-V Vector extensions.

  • Secure: APXM-6200 has been designed from conception to work within industry-standard security systems. It leverages RISC-V Supervisor Domains Access Protection to provide a complete security solution from secure boot to trusted execution.

  • AI Capable: With Vector Extensions, AI compute libraries and features for fast data coupling with AI accelerators, APXM-6200 is ready to support the growing demand for AI compute on 4K TV SoCs.

  • CPU + GPU: Imagination also offers a comprehensive range of GPU IP for 4K TVs that operate seamlessly with our CPUs.  When compared to other RISC-V application processors, APXM-6200 offers double the bus utilisation and half the memory traffic when operating alongside a GPU.
